'The Shining' - Special Edition 2 CD Soundtrack

...All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy...

CD 1 consists of the original Shining soundtrack and includes dialogue bits from the movie (Note: The dialogue tracks are separate and do not play over the music tracks)

CD 2 consists of 31 very rare additional alternative tracks composed by Wendy Carlos for the film. Over an hour of unfinished, expanded and rejected pieces of both studio tests and orchestral pieces. Some pieces have been heard (“Clockworks” was the music used for the original trailer) but much of it comes from artistic development. This process-of-change can be heard at all stages beginning with the opening “Colorado”, this music was written by Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind immediately after reading King’s novel but proved too brassy and intense for the final mood and was eventually subdued into the now classic “Main Title”

The white text represents previously released tracks. The green text represents dialogue & music that has been added from the actual movie or elsewhere.

Roger, I got The Shining Soundtrack yesterday. Amazing. Your rendition of it should have been the original one. Other than the nostalgic value, there is nothing better about the original Lp release than your soundtrack. I am still curious about how you obtained all of these songs. I mean the movie sound clips can be copied digitally with the right programs, but how did you collect all of the music? How ever you made this, it turned out great. Because of its rarity, your soundtrack is among my personal top valued CDs. Thanks for the great soundtrack, you will definitely see me buying more in the future. Erik

Hi, Roger. Thank you very much for the CD of the soundtrack for The Shining. You did a wonderful job with this! Part of what made The Shining so special was it s music, and you have truly captured the essence of the film here. I find that the CD makes great background music at work (although I have to fight the desire to type "All work and no play..." over and over again). I echo the sentiments of the other people who have praised the CD - it is tremendous. I like the way you've inserted some dialogue from the film, and it's great to hear complete versions of the old songs. I love your taste in movies for which you've chosen to make soundtrack CDs - we appear to like a lot of the same movies. Thanks again, Alan

I just received the soundtrack today. What can I say? Great freaking job. I've always wanted this soundtrack, and you've made a dream come true. Not only that, it's better than I even dreamed. The bonus tracks and the added dialogue are perfect! I'm really glad you added the 20's ballroom music that plays. It's very haunting. Stanley Kubrick and Wendy Carlos were absolute geniuses, and I'm glad that you've been able to give me their music in a more modern way, meaning that I do have the old vinyl soundtrack, but now I have this more modern (and improved) soundtrack that I will be able to listen to on my computer at work or even store on my ipod. After all... all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Sincerely, one very satisfied customer - Nathan

Hi Rog, I got the CD, thanks. First rate all around, I really enjoyed it! Captured the tone of the movie quite well and I appreciate the extras like the trailer music, which I think should have been in the film. Anyway, I'm a happy customer - I just wonder why Warner's never deemed this awesome soundtrack worth re-releasing? Better for you I guess .. Cheers, John

It arrived in the mail today, and is as fantastic as it is a dream come true. I despaired of the soundtrack ever being released. Thanks to you, it won't matter to me one way or another. The scratchy sound on several of the older songs doesn't bother me a bit. If anything, it only adds to the overall ambience. Anyway, this was more than extremely worthwhile. Many many thanks. Jonathan

Got the soundtrack yesterday. What can I say!?! Absolutely outstanding!! Done with real care, suggesting that it was created by someone who loves the film as much as those who buy the soundtrack do. Fantastic sound quality also. Thank you very, very much. Danny

Rog--- It arrived earlier in the week, and I was bowled over by its quality and your imaginative sequencing.  I also enjoyed the artwork, inside and out.  I own the 1980 incarnation on vinyl, and it cannot hold a candle to your creation.  Many thanks ---Eben

It's a compilation deserving of the film and the efforts it's creators made to achieve something memorable and appropriately terrifying. The music contributes so much to the viewer's experience of Kubrick's vision that your cd cannot fail to come across as visually as it does, like all the best soundtracks. But having said that, it's a generous, crisp and thoughtful collection of music and excerpts, as well transferred as I could have expected, and tastefully presented to boot. Thanks again, Stan

Hey Roger, I got the soundtrack for 'The Shining' a few days ago. It's better that what I expected. You somehow have managed to capture the "feel" of the movie on one disk. Amazing.

I  just finished listening to your Shining audio CD for the first time. What can I say? You more than exceeded my expectations both in terms of quality and in clarity of sound reproduction. I had my doubts about your idea of mixing voiceovers from the movie with the sound track but you pulled it off with unobtrusive timing and with good taste. I own a pair of planar magnetic Magneplanar 3.6R speakers (Stereophile class A) that are ruthlessly revealing of the source and I can say with confidence that your CD is light years ahead of what one would expect from a private endeavor. Well done! Kim

Hey Roger! WOW! I just finished listening to the Shining Soundtrack that you sold me today. It was much more than I expected!! You seemed like like a decent guy through your e-mail and site but others had said, "beware," and, "look out for con artists and shitty bootlegs." So, I was prepared for maybe something above "so-so." Well, you really have something here! I am thoroughly impressed! I think you could get away with charging a lot more considering the niche market for this particular soundtrack. I appreciate the extra effort of the cover art and my son and I got a real chuckle out of the CD art (All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!). I love the dialogue you added between Wendy and Jack when he is supposed to be writing. I played it for my girlfriend because, as a writer, I go through that same scenario atleast 2-3 times a month! Well, anyway, thanks for the effort and I'll tell others about your site. Thanks again, John

Dude the album rocks - thanks for the service. St

Hey! I have only listened to the Shining cd so far. I've been really busy listing ebay auctions but that CD is AWESOME! I was expecting it to be good and maybe not clear since it's not an official CD but I was so surprised at how great it was! The art was kickass too! Great job man! Let me know when you come out with some more cds and I'll probably be buying the others that I haven't gotten already! Andrew

Hey Roger - I received THE SHINING CD -- thanks!!! I have to tell you that I'm totally impressed by the quality of this CD! I'm not sure what kind of master tapes you used, but it's all very much studio quality and full CD digital sound. No hiss! The dialogue excerpts are masterfully mixed and adds much the feel and atmosphere in between the musical tracks. Easily to say, I thoroughly thrilled with this CD! Thanks again Roger, and I'll look into future purchases from you. Take care!!! Patrick

The Shining CD is outstanding.  It truly has everything from the movie....eerie music and great quotes!   The sound quality is better than I even thought!  The artwork on the CD and case are great as well.  Very well worth it to me. Jeff

OK, I received the CD yesterday.  Stuck it in the player expecting a typical bootleg; boy, was I wrong.   The quality was simply stunning, and the audio cut scenes were expertly handled!   How exactly you managed this, I don't know; all I can think of is that you got your hands on some of the original
master reels (back in the day, they had a separate reel for the music).  All in all, it's the best twenty bucks I've spent on a CD in a long, long time! Jess

Hey Rog, I've been listening to your CD of The Shining all day. Outstanding work! I love the way you mixed those dialog tracks along with the music. I don't know what you secret is, and I won't ask! The music sounds great, considering I first bought a Japanese import of the score a year ago, and it
sounded like crap. Finally a chance for me to listen to this great soundtrack free of hiss and other unwanted noise! Thank you so much, I'll definitely come back soon to buy some more of your soundtracks! Dave

Roger: I received The Shining Soundtrack last Thursday -  Two words: sublime, and exceptional! Thank you, Michael

Roger, this disc is a godsend to the hardcore fans of THE SHINING, Carlos, Kubrick, Nicholson, King - you name it.  I've listened to a  bad, hiss filled cassette tape of this great soundtrack for around 20 years and now, finally, I get to enjoy even more music (not to mention the juicy dialogue snippets) from the film with fantastic clarity and the convenience of CD.   Worth every penny!  Thanks for your fantastic work on this man, you're a credit to horror and soundtrack fans the world over.  BeAst
Wishes - Leif

Rog,
I just received the cd yesterday, it's amazing!  You have done an excellent job.   This will be one of the most treasured cds in my collection.  Everything from your choices of movie dialogue to the music to the packaging is outstanding.  Thanks for making such a fine collection available!
Jason

I got THE SHINING SPECIAL EDITION SOUNDTRACK CD a couple of days ago. I've
listened to it several times. What do I have to say? INCREDIBLE! I've purchased a few SPECIAL EDITION SOUNDTRACK CD's from you but THE SHINING is by far the best. The packaging and graphics are very impressive as is the crystal clear sound of the disc. The "all work and no play makes jack a dull boy" written all over the CD is a great touch. The dialogue excerpts from the film fit seemlessly with the music.
A classic horror film soundtrack to classic horror film. I will highly recommend your CD to any fan of Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING.
Thanks again!
Christian

The Shining ST rules!   What an unbelievable score.  Tons of great tracks, all of it well-suited to the movie.  Too damn good. -Ron

Rog, got the cd today. I LOVE IT! It's so goulishly delightful. Worth every cent. Pleasure doing buisness with you, and I will refer you to everyone I know.
Thanks again,
Ronda

Hi,
I got "The Shining" CD today. The sound quality was excellent, and the addition of eerie dialogue from the movie was a nice touch. Very disturbing music -- it gave me the creeps listening to it. I'd be happy to recommend it to others for you.
Thanks, Mike F

Roger,
Just got the Shining soundtrack in the mail, and it is perfect.  I had just threw away $40.00 on a crappy 8 track version CDR of the Japanese import, and your soundtrack blows it away.  Thanks again.
Joe

Hey Rog,
I just got the soundtrack today. I can't believe how good it sounds. Certainly exceeded my expectations.
Man! The Wendy Carlos stuff, the Bartok and Ligetti tracks...WOW!
It's amazing. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this up.
Mat

The CD is awesome, far better than what I would have gotten on ebay and at half the price. Please keep me in mind if you do any John Carpenter stuff.
Thanks again,
Bill
